It has been a long road, but version 2.0 of Portable Software Updater is finally here! This release has a lot of cool new features (not just a new name & icon :P) and covers most of the wishes me and its users wanted for a very long time. A year later after my first working version, I'm proud to see all items in the wishlist have been integrated. Anyway, version 2 has three major improvements and a few other smaller bug fixes. Details? Here it goes...
Three new additions: - Progress bar - Now it's a lot easier to find out PSU's progress. Whether it's checking, downloading or installing an app, Portable Software Updater will always keep you up to speed with its progress both from the progress bar and tray tip in the tray menu. - Silent Install - Be advised! This is not an official silent install! It's a workaround, since officially silent installation is NOT supported. How does this work? Well, instead of clicking Next, Next, Next again and again, Portable Software Updater will automatically fill in the installation path for you and click the Next buttons. (If you're not interested in the standard installation and want to customize something in the setup, just choose Check & Run instead of Check&SI) - Stealth Mode - Starting with this version, there's no need to access the app's GUI in order to view updates or start an update scan. Now you go through the GUI once: configure the actions for each program, save the profile (don't forget the checking options if you're interested in periodic scans) and then just switch to Stealth Mode. In Stealth Mode, the app runs only from the tray menu. If you've selected a profile, as suggested above, by clicking Check with predefined profile will act the same as pressing the GO button, and if you've selected a periodic check, PSU will perform it even in stealth mode. In other words, Stealth Mode works like the Window Mode, but in the background, without making itself noticed.
And a few small improvements: - A few colors have been changed (thanks tsetsefly) - winMd5Sum detection bug fixed (thanks ssta) - When running/installing an app, the path is automatically filled (thanks TheAntagonizer) - The Settings window has been replaced by a tab in the GUI (when selecting/modifying an option, the changes are automatically and immediately saved) - MPlayer & 2X Client have been removed (when compiling version 2.0 they were no longer available for download) - A menu listing all found updates has been added to both the window and the tray menu - A first-start and readme dialog have been integrated in order to get users familiarized with the app's basic functionality
That's about it! Version 2.1 will add 2X Client back (meanwhile the download has been repaired) and it will enable users to change check options from the tray menu. There are some other suggestions I've received by mail from portableapps.com forum users, but I'm not sure I'll get to them in version 2.1 or 2.2...
As always, suggestions and bugs should be placed on the support forum. As you can see, I do my best to give the proper attention. |
